WA: Mother's own abuse a factor in killing of baby girl: Judge

A mother who fatally shook her four-month-old daughter after abusing her for months
will spend at least three years in jail, with a West Australian judge accepting the woman's
own childhood abuse was a significant mitigating factor.

Twenty-five-year-old JEAN GARVEY has been sentenced to five years in prison for the
manslaughter of JESSICAROSE, who died from brain injuries in July 2003.

Supreme Court Justice LINDY JENKINS says it's a tragedy GARVEY, who was homeless and
unemployed, had not received the community support she needed, despite visits from state
welfare authorities.

Justice JENKINS backdated GARVEY'S sentence to the time of her arrest in September
2003, meaning she could be released from prison in 21 months.
